Lucian Pinckney is a self-taught, artist/craftsperson who works in various media including acrylic paint, wood and mixed media collage. Currently, Lucian produces folding screens, room dividers, tables, hand painted floor mats and wall hangings in his line of functional art; defined as works that hold both utile and aesthetic value.
Many of his works relate fascinating stories calling upon an awareness of family and cultural heritage using vibrant displays of color, African symbolism and design.
Lucian’s resume of exhibitions includes shows at the Empire State Black Arts Cultural Festival in Albany, NY; “Reflections in African-American Art III” at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Queens, NY; the American Museum of Natural History “Kwanzaa Celebration,” Manhattan, NY; the Four Women Circle of Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; and Joining Forces 2013: Living Art on the Hill in Harlem, NY.
Some of the notable collectors of Lucian’s work includes: the late Gil Noble, Emmy Award winning producer and host of “Like It Is”, WABC-TV’s weekly public affairs show; Dr. Adelaide Sanford, Vice Chancellor Emerita, New York State Board of Regents, (presented during her “Reflections of an Educational Sojourn” tribute, October 2007); Dr. Joy DeGruy, internationally renowned educator, lecturer and author of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing”; Dr. James McIntosh and Nana Betty Dopson, long time community leaders/organizers/activists and co-founders of CEMOTAP (Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People); the late Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan, internationally renowned egyptologist, educator and author, (presented during the 2014 celebration of CEMOTAP’s 27th anniversary and tribute to Dr. Ben); Prof. Keith Crawford, R.Ph., Ph.D., Howard University College of Medicine; Dr. Katrina Hazzard-Donald, known as one of the nation’s leading dance researchers, author, lecturer and professor at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; as well as the Dr. John Henrik Clarke House, an institution dedicated to the culture, principles and education of people of African ancestry located in Harlem, NY.
